Josh's Letter to The Scribe
Earlier this semester I arrived on campus around noon. After driving in circles for about 20 minutes searching for a ridiculously overpriced parking spot, I parked in the garage. I then trekked to the bookstore to pick up some books for class. After wandering past a few of those insulting price comparison signs I found what I was looking for and proceeded to the check-out to be violated. The checker gave me a reassuring smile as she emptied my bank account, and I left the store feeling hosed, but reassured. Afterward, I felt like blowing off some steam and went looking for a fun campus event at which to unwind. However, like most days on campus there was nothing going on, and I just went home.
This story is a common reality for many students at UCCS, and on the current path it will only get worse before it gets better. Parking fees are set to increase significantly next semester, the bookstore will continue to price-gouge and insult our intelligence, and campus events will remain sparse.
Motivated by these problems, I have decided to run for the Student Government Association as a candidate for Vice President. If elected, my running mate and I will work to stop the increases in parking fees, and put an end to the price gouging at the bookstore. Furthermore in order to stimulate a more active and fun student community we plan to establish an incentive program to motivate clubs to organize and host campus events. This election is crucial for the students, and they have to make a choice. They can either choose more of the same, or they can choose to elect an executive pair that will fight for their best interests and work to save them money while promoting a more active campus, Williams and Green

David's Controversially Timed Scribe Letter
My name is David Williams, and I am a first time, Student Senator in SGA. I had two campaign slogans last election, they were “why not?” and “what’s the worst that could happen?” Though these campaign slogans might indicate that my attitude regarding SGA is somewhat nonchalant, I assure you that my reasons for joining are serious.
Like many of your readers, I became aggravated with some of the ways things worked on this campus. I was tired of our bookstore taking advantage of the students by having outrageous prices, and than having the audacity to put some “price matching” crap on a few books to show they have low prices. Do they think we’re idiots? I was tired of our parking sitiution [sic]. The majority of our students are full time, not only for school, but work as well. It is wrong to have an expensive price for parking (especially if one is only paying to have an opportunity, or chance, to park) while knowing that the students have a tough enough time just trying to pay bills. By the way, next semester, parking prices go up to about two hundred dollars.
These are just two of the reasons that motived [sic] me to join our student government. Over the past school year I’ve found that our government doesn’t like to try and tackle those heavy issuses [sic]. I believe that SGA is more concerned with saving face with the administration, rather than telling them to screw themselves (when needed of course). I joined to fight for students. I believe [sic] that SGA can be used for more than just giving away money to clubs, and a forum for which some administrators speak.
Now I’m not saying that our current government doesn’t care about the students. I personally know that our co-executives and many of our Senate members have done a lot for our students. But more needs to be done and positive changes need to be made that will effect all the students and not just some.
With that I, David Williams, am formally announcing my candidacy for the Presidency of the Student Government Association. It is my hope that the students and our government won’t go quietly into that gentle night.

A Few Words on Who We Are
Joshua Green is a third year Political Science/English double major. He actively participates in various campus activities, and is the treasurer of the College Republicans.
A Breakdown of the Issues
PARKING
Problem: The parking fees have steadily increased while parking spaces have steadily decreased.
Solutions:
Establish an oversight committee to investigate the parking problems.
Stabilize and decrease parking permit fees by restructuring the budget, and bringing in outside funding through advertising/naming rights.
The Bookstore
Problem: The UCCS Bookstore is under stocked, and way over priced.
Solutions:
Create an investigative oversight committee that will provide feasible solutions.
Work with the Bookstore to decrease their exorbitant prices, and late arrivals.
Campus Events
Problem: Campus life at UCCS can be dull and uneventful. There are to few campus activities and events.
Solutions:
To implement an incentive program for clubs to encourage hosting and organizing campus events.
Work with the clubs to facilitate more campus activities.
FCQ
Problem: The FCQ results are not conveniently accessible to students, nor are they inquisitive enough on diversity issues.
Solutions:
Work to get the FCQ results posted online.
Add questions to the assessment regarding tolerance of diversity issues like political and religious beliefs.
Fees
Problem: There are many unnecessary student fee increases at UCCS.
Solution:
Veto any unnecessary student fee increases. Promote an attitude of fiscal accountability and responsibility within SGA.

As your student leaders David Williams and Joshua Green plan to not only help clubs make the campus more vibrant, but advocate for the rights of all students regardless of affiliation. Their top priority is to stand up against to the outrageous parking fees, the price gouging bookstore, and all needless student fee increases. Furthermore, they plan to create a stronger sense of community by encouraging clubs to take a more active role on campus. Finally, David and Josh are not afraid to stand up to the administration to ensure that the voices of the students are heard.
